In 2023 our first project brought together 12 students twice a week over the period of six months for solar energy training which included lecture and experiential learning in the forms of labs, field trips, and internships. Topics included solar energy principles, basic solar and water heating theories, and electrical and solar technology and applications. Participants learned technical skills including safe use of equipment, roof inspections, fitting bulbs, battery cages, solar data collections, solar installations, and practiced creating solar diagrams. They also learned practical business skills including how to register, pay for, and provide business license documentation. For their first project, they installed solar panels on the roof of their classroom.
Building upon the success of our first project, we are expanding opportunities in 2024 by adding additional renewable energy trainings in plumbing and electrical to our core solar training. By partnering with the National Industrial Trading Authority (NITA) we are able to provide participants who complete the program official industry specific certifications that have a proven track record to lead to employment with businesses. The current cohort of 40 young adults are earning KNQF Solar Installation T1 and T2, and Electrical and Plumbing Certificates in all levels III, II and I. In addition to these hard skills, participants also gain important life skills including communication and business management. We are also for the first time including jua kali - the informal sector of small business owners and traders who operate business in open markets or on the street) - to provide specialized workshops in these areas in addition to our ongoing training program.
We are currently working with financial constraints of limited funds for the 2024 Solar Education Project. The center needs improvements and equipment to be fully operational to meet our training goals.
